Computational Omics and Systems Biology
Vlaams Instituut voor Biotechnologie (VIB)
Sven is Professor of Machine Learning in the Department of Biomolecular Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Ghent University and is a staff scientist in the computational omics and systems biology group CompOmics at VIB. Prof. Degroeve has a background in Computer Sciences and, for the past two decades, has made significant contributions to the fields of Computational Genomics and Proteomics. With extensive expertise in data analysis, and Machine Learning specifically, he is involved in several substantial EU projects such as METASPACE, MASSTRPLAN, and EPIC-XS.
The CompOmics group, headed by Prof. Dr. Lennart Martens, is part of the Department of Biomolecular Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of Ghent University, and the VIB-UGent Center for Medical Biotechnology of VIB, both in Ghent, Belgium.
The group has its roots in Ghent, but has active members all over Europe, and specializes in the management, analysis, and integration of high-throughput Omics data with an aim towards establishing solid data stores, processing methods, and tools to enable downstream systems biology research.
Embedded in the group is a core Machine Learning team managed by Prof. Degroeve. This team applies Machine Learning and Deep Learning algorithms to model the behaviour of LC-MS/MS under different conditions by exploiting the vast amount of Proteomics data generated today.
